July 14, 2013 — Donald Maurice will speak about vicarious liability claims against creditors as a result of the actions of their vendors at the annual meeting of ACA International in San Diego, Calif. on July 15.
Maurice and attorney David Schultz of Chicago, Ill. will evaluate the theories of direct and indirect liability as they relate to the Telephone Consumer Protection Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and will discuss the implications of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s “service provider” requirements and its recent enforcement activity.

May 14, 2013 — Donald Maurice spoke about the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act at the spring meeting of the National Association of Retail Collection Attorneys in Las Vegas, Nev. on May 10.
Maurice spoke with attorneys Manny Newburger of Austin, Tx. and David Schultz of Chicago, Ill. about implied exceptions to litigation activities under the FDCPA, as established by various recent court cases.
April 29, 2013 — Donald Maurice has published an article in The Business Lawyer (Vol. 68, Issue 2) entitled, “Say What You Mean: The FDCPA and Problems of Interpretation.” Maurice co-authored the article with law professor Laurie Lucas of Oklahoma State University and attorney Tomio Narita of San Francisco, Calif.
The article discusses the problems that arise when attempting to interpret the FDCPA due to the many “varied and often conflicting decisions throughout the federal circuits.”
