This session will explore why medical debt became a major public policy issue and will examine how medical debt differs from traditional consumer debt by discussing its originators and account types, documentation challenges, and operational risks.
The discussion will evaluate the practical effects of medical debt credit-reporting restrictions on consumers and the credit and collections industries and will review significant federal and state developments, including trends in state medical debt legislation, differences in approaches to the treatment of medical debt, and whether medical debt forgiveness programs have been effective.
Finally, the program will assess proposed and enacted legislation affecting the purchasing, servicing, and collection of medical debt, highlighting the implications for industry participants and policymakers alike.

Donald Maurice represents the financial services industry, successfully litigating matters in appellate and trial courts throughout the country in individual and class actions and guiding businesses, trade associations and financial services companies nationwide in regulatory and compliance matters including data privacy and ethics.
