Webinar: Maurice Wutscher’s Donald Maurice to Discuss DC Debt Collection Legislation

Sept. 2, 2021 — Maurice Wutscher attorney Donald Maurice will join a panel in examining changes to legislation passed by the District of Columbia City Council in July to amend its debt collection law during an RMAI webinar Friday, Sept. 3 at 12 pm ET.

The District of Columbia’s debt collection legislation becomes effective Sept. 23 and imposes significant requirements for data and documentation as well as restrictions on consumer contact. The legislation has undergone substantive changes since it was introduced in July.

The panelists, including Mark Naiman of Absolute Resolutions Corp. and Franci Wayland of PRA Group, will discuss the latest changes and amendments to the legislation and potential compliance strategies companies can implement to address these changes.

June 21, 2021 — Maurice Wutscher attorney Brent Yarborough will discuss vicarious liability in debt collections during a webinar Thursday, June 24 at 1 pm ET.

A ruling in a recent court case has partially held a debt buyer liable for the actions of the collector working its accounts, creating a new series of concerns for the accounts receivable management industry. Companies are required to monitor how collectors are working their accounts, but now may be held liable when collectors do or say something they shouldn’t.

In this webinar, the panel will discuss the ruling and the concept of vicarious liability in the ARM industry.

May 14, 2019 — Maurice Wutscher is hosting a three part webinar series on May 15, May 22 and June 6 examining the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to implement the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Maurice Wutscher’s Donald Maurice to Speak at RMA International Executive Summit

July 31, 2017 — Maurice Wutscher attorney Donald Maurice will discuss successful, ethics-driven compliance management tactics for the receivables management industry at the RMA International Executive Summit in Lake Tahoe, Aug. 1-3.

In addition, Maurice will join a panel of speakers in reviewing federal and state legislative and regulatory developments impacting the receivables management industry and how RMA is responding. The panel will also discuss new debt buying laws in Colorado, Maine and Oregon.

Webinar to Examine Use of Bankruptcy Code to Impose Debt Collector Liability

March 21, 2017 — Maurice Wutscher’s Alan C. Hochhesier and Donald Maurice will discuss the CFPB’s and the U.S. Trustee’s use of Bankruptcy Code Section 105 as an enforcement tool in addressing the conduct of debt buying companies during a webinar March 29.

Section 105 provides a bankruptcy court with broad powers to carry out the provisions of the Bankruptcy Code. Recently, the U.S. Trustee filed two actions under the section concerning a debt buying company’s conduct in filing proofs of claim. The webinar will examine Section 105 and discuss what creditors need to know to avoid liability.
